Just so that poor innocent fun players like me don't get tied up with the growing number of pro players here. Or maybe I'm just getting worse!!!! LOL

Hi DJ,

We do have a rating system, we use Elo ratings. If you click a player's name just about anywhere it appears, you'll go to their profile, which shows their Elo rating for each game type under "Statistics". So for instance, if I click your name in the header of your forum message, I see this on your profile below the initial box with your name and such:
Game Elo Rating Simple Win % ...
---------- ---------- ------------
Backgammon 1635 51.06%
...and so on for each game type. The list shows your Elo rating, your "simple" win % (games won divided by games played), how many games you've played, and how many you've won/lost/drawn.

More details on the help page linked above.

Enjoy your games!

Hi T.J.

My post was intended to be somwhat tongue in cheek with a backhanded compliment to the skill of the BG players here.

The system I was alluding to may consist of;

1. You can beat them.
2. You stand a chance.
3. They are good.
4. They are better than good.
5. You stand no chance.

What do you think? LOL

DJ

:-) Fair 'nuff. As it happens, the Elo system is based on the odds of a player beating another player (that's central to how the ratings get updated at the end of a game), so we could fairly easily tell you what Elo thinks of your chances, since we already have the code to figure that out. Cool idea.

If you're curious, the calcuation is:
Your odds of winning = (1 / (1 + 10^(-(your rating - their rating) / 400))) * 100
...where you never let the "your rating - their rating" value be more than 350 or less than -350 (I didn't try to include the lim factor in the above). The result is a percentage between 0 and 100 representing your odds of winning.

T.J. I'm sure your system works very well, mine was intended as a bit of a laugh and to get people talking (posting on what seem to be stagnant boards) Please don't ever change the site from the happy band of players we have here. :o)

Thanks! Still an interesting idea, though....

how about a page with the rankings say from 1-100 & so on ie ted 1948 #1 joe 1937 #2 so you can easily see what place you are in relation to the elo. 100 to the page .this way joe blaugh invites you .you look in the ratings & find joe .,then decide to accept or not. i know if say player 1= 1800 vs player 2= 1600 player 1 loses a lot more points than he will get with a win. . a lot of times you may be rated well but can lose to anyone. so you have to play players around your own #'s .of course you make some friends & that goes out the window themeister

Hi,

We do have the Top Players list (click Players in the tabs at the top, then Top Players on the left), which shows the top 20 players of each game. That list is not entirely reliable at the moment because some people do things to manipulate their ratings artificially and we don't police it well (yet). After the next big update there are a few things we're planning to make that manipulation a bit harder (though a determined cheat will always find ways). Perhaps once we've done that, we could show someone's rank (e.g., position in the list) as well as rating on their profile.

Enjoy your games!

what do you mean by players can manipulate their ratings. if found out they should be bounced . how can a player do this. unless someone decides to lose on purpose to raise anothers rating. i can see if the same player is entered at work at home at his girls place.then he can have 1 member always beating the other 2 & therefore have a higher rating than they should. since we're playing for fun & not money. who would want to do those things. i mean to what end . its not glorious to be # 10 when in reality you should be 97.yes we all like to win. one may even be proud of a good rating. but manipulation geeeeeeeez i feel sorry for poor souls like that. what moaxes & snooks they must be. tm
