I haven't played Othello for many years but this system sounds like a good idea.
It's a bit like the randomised layouts that Salvo can provide, avoiding the problem of creating layout after layout such that they are different (to be unpredictable) yet reasonably safe. This task gets harder and harder the more you play.
I think this Othello version is even better than that as the creators of the list have taken pains to make the starting positions reasonably fair; one player will inevitably have an advantage but these fall within a narrow range.
As T.J. has said recently, he's in a period where he hasn't got time to put into the site so this won't be implemented any time soon.
But if he were so inclined in the future, the provision of the starting positions by the creators of the list would make it very simple to implement: Pick a position number, get the position from the table, set the pieces on the board, start the game from there.
