Is it useual for a player to double before even starting the game. A 9 pointer game, if the player wishes a quick game could they enter a smaller game. Played back gammon for years and not seem this done as many times as a certain player on here.Has it happened to anyone else in dec13 9 game or in the past too. I am wondering what the point of it is. puzzeled?
yes, i believe i'm playing the same player in several games, i don't understand why someone would want to offer the cube at the start (unless its post crawford). but i'll accept and play on with cube in hand :)
I can think of two reasons. The first is simply that it makes the game a bit more of a gamble.
The other is that it immediately does away with having to think or worry about the cube until either the opponent sends it back (in which case the player may tend to drop more than they should) or until the next game. The latter is like saying "I'm playing with the cube but I'd prefer to play cubeless". (To which the thoughtless reply is "So go and play some cubeless matches then").
But, horse's mouth and all that... What does the player in question say?
thanks you for your replies. i haven,t ask them yet, may do if i get games with him again. i resigned the last game, cause they've done it before with me. cannt remember the final score though, of the games i continued to play
If a lower rated player is playing a higher rated player , the lower rated player has less to lose (in points) than the higher rated player....so some double early ...thinking it's 50-50 to win....but the stakes are un-even. I blocked a player from Iran who trying to climb the ladder more quickly using this "you have more to lose than me"...as they kept coming back.
This is why I will only play matches without the cube. We must all be talking about the same player and I no longer play them anymore.

Build up a good lead and then double back.
