Now the storm's passed and cleanup has begun, we'll give the utilities a few more days to sort themselves out. Timeouts come back on Sunday, games overdue on Sunday will time out.
I hear there is still a lot of flooding and 300,000+ without power. Perhaps one more week without timeouts might be acceptable to the rest of us? I know I wouldn't mind at all.
I underestimated the power outages. As of yesterday (Fri 9/2)there were still almost one million people and businesses without power. How many of those actually play here?...Unknown.
Where are you finding that information? When you posted your original note I easily found news stories saying it was more like 1.2 million without power, so I figured I'd check back today. I can't find any indication there remain significant power outages affecting millions at this point. The biggest I can find is this story saying as of two days ago, 81,000 people in Rhode Island were without power. And of course, a lot can happen in two days.
Please do feel free to point me at up-to-date information about mass outages, it's surprisingly hard to find from abroad. -- T.J. Crowder First Primate Pocket-Monkey.com
http://fuelfix.com/blog/2011/09/02/irene-power-outages-put-the-northeast-on-edge/ This was the article I referred to, saying 895,000 still without power as of Friday. It's true though every article quotes a different number.
I'm going to wait until tomorrow (Monday the 5th). If anyone has reliable, up-to-date information on power outages affecting hundreds of thousands of people, please let me know.
Turning off timeouts was a courtesy in any case, and one we very, very rarely extend. But given the concentration of players we have in the overall area, it seemed appropriate.
With the rain moving northward from our Tropical Storm Lee and the possible direct impact of Hurricane Katia on the eastern seabord, these numbers will rise once again in the coming week. Today there are thousands out of power on the Gulf coast.
I'm definitely not arguing with you TJ ... I just don't want anybody to lose their games due to Mother Nature's fury. Now "Lee" is soaking the SE, and a tornado in New York. The entire east coast deserves a break.
Indeed, and this is part (actually a big part) of why we have vacations, because if we turned off timeouts for every tropical storm / earthquake / flood / etc. worldwide, as Colin says, we wouldn't have timeouts at all. The advantage to tropical storms and such (as opposed to, say, earthquakes) is that you usually have some kind of warning...
The news stated the AM there were 77,000 with out power in 4 states up north. I have noticed on IYT over half of my eastern players have timed out, a shame but not much anyone can do about it , TS Lee is leaving my area today but moving NE, with drenching rain. To bad ALL the tourneys don't have a uniform timeout , at least that way you do have a chance of recovering your games due to Mother Natures wrath.
In the whole scheme of things, I suppose for those folks who still don't have power, losing some games at this and other gamesites is probably not on their list of priorities anyway. Turning timeouts back on it shall be. Good luck to all this hurricane season!!
To me games are just that a source of entertainment, nothing about these games is going to change my life .Win-lose-draw or timeout, it is still just a game. It was nice of TJ to concern himself with the North easterners but there are many other locations with tragedy. I wish the best to all being effected in various parts of the world.
