Backgammon Game Resignation Bug Message #382    Replies: 1

Hi folks,

I thought it worthwhile to mention a minor bug we have in the Backgammon game, so people are aware of it. It only affects match games where someone resigns a game but not the match.

If you resign a game but not the match, after ending the game and adjusting the score, the system should roll one die for you and one for your opponent (re-rolling in case of doubles), and then give the resulting dice to the player with the higher die value to play as his/her first roll.

However, if you resign in certain situations, I'm afraid it gets confused and after ending the game and adjusting the score, it just turns the turn over to your opponent with the usual Roll/Double choice. There are three problems with that: 1. They get the turn, when it should be a matter of luck who goes first in the next game; 2. They could double on the first turn, which isn't allowed; and 3. They could roll doubles, which isn't allowed. All of these present an advantage to the other player.

We'll fix this at some point soon, but I thought I should mention it. Unfortunately, for a variety of reasons, in the meantime we won't be fixing games where this happens.

I haven't isolated all of the cases where the game gets confused in this way, but here's one of them: If you have the Roll/Double question, click Roll, and then click Resign, it'll happen. I think it also happens if you play a roll, then resign (because playing the roll got you out of a gammon or something).

I'll post a note when it's fixed. Sorry for the trouble,

Hi folks,

Happy to report that this bug is fixed; or to put it another way, I've fixed a game resignation bug in Backgammon Match which seems to fit the description of this bug. :-)

The bug I fixed is that if you moved your pieces, then resigned in the same turn (for instance, you moved a piece off the board to avoid a gammon, but were otherwise in a hopeless situation and so you then immediately resigned), the game incorrectly set up the Roll/Double question rather than going straight to "play the roll". It did do the roll-off between the two players and give the turn to the player who won that roll-off, it just then offered them the Roll/Double option rather than having them play the resulting dice from the roll-off.

Apologies, and thanks to the members who noticed and reported the bug (particularly Heartsvertigo).
