Hi folks,

We'd value your opinions about vacations in particular formats of tournaments, would you do us favor and answer the two questions here and here? The first question is about Standard format tournies, the second is about UltraFast format tournies; they're both the same question other than the tourney format.

Thanks in advance!

Is it possiable to NOT allow vacations on round 1,because you know when they are starting, then allow vacations for rounds 2 or 3.

Thanks for the suggestion, but if a tournament allows vacations, we'll have it allow vacations in every round. Not allowing them in Round 1 would be additional work and an ongoing support problem; the gains just aren't worth it (in my view). Also, you don't necessarily know when some of the lesser-played tournies are starting because they don't always have enough players to start on time.

Vacations are a good idea, no more than one vacation per person per tourny. Grace periods were not a good idea... it allows a game to drag on for nearly an eternity.

i think if you do have vacations it should be for all the ultra games they soon time out otherwise.the standard games with or without the option`s ie. standard with vacations feature and standard with out vacations feature. it would be splitting tournies even further though. some of the smaller tournies would struggle to get enough players to enter though.

A tourney may well run long enough that a player might take multiple vacations. Many tournies will cross more than one yearly holiday, for instance, since many tournies run more than a year.

I think you'll find that grace time isn't the reason tourney games take a while (certainly not UltraFast tournies). Standard tournies are just very, very slow. Once we have vacations, I suspect we'll be able to introduce a new tourney format that will run much faster but, by allowing vacations, still works for a lot of people.

I'm glad T.J. put forward this discussion as I have been missing this feature very much. I like to play fast-paced tourneys but with UltraFast tourneys, I cannot go off-line even for a weekend. That made me abandon them completely.

There will surely have to be some limit on the total amount of days off (perhaps with an option to buy some extra days for a low fee) although I'm not sure how to set the limit. It's not just the big vacation (e.g. 14 days in one shot) but weekends too.

Do we want to separate weekends from vacations? Say, a limit of 4 weeks for vacation and a possibility to indicate one day per week that doesn't count into game limits?

Thanks T.J.
PePa

Yes indeed -- amusingly enough, when this thread described the vacations feature, you were...on vacation! ;-)

It is just a game after all... we all have the competitve spirit, but i think we have to put it in perspective.

Not many of these sights are still free to join and we are not playing for prizes.... just pride.

If a concensus is reached then we all have to deal with it...

I see no problem here and really could not see why anyone would have a problem with change.... Everything changes and we all move on...

Do what ya gotta do.....!!!!!

Would you play in tournies that did/did not have vacations?

Yes... =:) In other words that would not be my deciding factor on if I would play or not.

I did have one time where I lost a bunch of ultra games because the motel I was in for one night didn't have internet access like they had said they did when we called in the reservations...

I'm not sure how often I would even use the vacation option as I'm seldom away where I don't have internet access

i think the vacation times are ok.. but i think some of the tourneys have to long a playing time...you can keep some of the tourneys you have but i prefer the 1 or 2 day tourneys and loss of game if you dont play...
i dont like playing in a tourney for a year

Isn't part of the challenge of the ultra games to play within the time limit? I'm fine either way. I just enjoy playing the games.

Hi TJ, I don't see the NEED for this, there are still tourn's from July LAST year going..... Prior planning prevents poor production..... You have a great site.. seems like the more you give some people the more they want.

I think standard ought to have vacation; however IIRC, you're proposing that players can make some moves while still technically being on vacation. I don't know how others feel about this, but I think if you're able to get online to make a few moves, then they should not be able to stay on vacation afterwards.

UF tourneys should either be NO vaca, or a very limited vaca, like 2 days. Players knowing something might come up soon should avoid that particular UF tourney, but sometimes things crop up unexpectedly, but by limiting UF vaca to just 2 days might give them enough time to get past the reason for the vaca, while still not dragging on the UF tourney for others.

I'd probably play UFs with no vac if all was well for me at the time.

I am for vacations being allowed. I just don't join tournies right now for the UF if I might be out on biz for a full day/evening. I have timed out many times and it gets frustrating when you are trying your best to beat the clock but miss it by an hour or two.

If I understand it right all that happens is you would lose? I could understand if we were playing for a prize or some sort of winnings but come-on it's just entertainment!!! I don't care either way what ever the majority decides is fine with me but let's keep it real it's just games!!! Oh by the way I'll be going on Vacation in April so after December I won't be entering any new tournies!! and what ever I might have left I guess I'll just lose because were leaving for 2 weeks and I don't know if we will have access to a computer.

On or before the 15th. It's a matter of finding the time to finish writing the necessary code. :-) But I promised myself that last year's suspension of timeouts for Christmas, Hanukkah (partially, we missed a bit last year), and New Year's Eve would be the last year we'd do it. Yes, I know that most of our players are in countries where those are major holidays, but a good number of our players aren't, and as I've said before, it doesn't seem right for a global site to be declaring timeout holidays for just certain selected occasions. Hence the vacations feature where you choose your own time off (which I thought I'd have done months ago).

I agree there is definitely a NEED for some sort of vacation feature! I am going into the hospital for surgery on Dec. 10th, and
I have tried to make allowances for that with my "friendly" games. The time-change
feature is a big help for that! Thank you,
T.J.!! 8^) However, in the case of tournies,
there is no way for a person to make a last minute time adjustment to account for an unexpected absence. My personal opinion is that however many vacation days a person has in a given (annual?) period that they be allowed to disperse them as they choose to use them - one day, three days, a week or
whatever at a time. Once the annual vacation days are used up there will be no more days available until the next calendar period when a new allotment is given. So basically,
let all the players pick their own vacation
days! For those who get more than 2 or 3 weeks of REAL vacation a year.... be glad you get that much vacation! Some of us get
NO VACATION at all! If we go with the 30 days annual vacation that T.J. has proposed
that should be sufficient to keep everyone
satisfied. For those who get MORE than those 30 days of vacation a year.... take me with you please!! I've never been anywhere!! 8^)
(I'll make sure I don't enter tournies when
I know I'm not able to play.)
