Pocket-Monkey was down for some time unexpectedly on Sunday the 6th of April. We're back up and running now; I've asked the web hosting provider what happened, as it looks like it was a machine issue.
Timeouts are turned off for the moment until I know what happened.
While the site was down I learn my son went camping- I'm like when did he leave?? And when did he grow up? I guess at times the site must be down so I can catch up on my family-
obviously this site is just way too good. in a moment of panic i tried a cpl of other sites. NO WAY. this is the place. what we need is a room of sorts where we can all commiserate, lol
First off, thank you for all the kind comments above, that's really great! Sorry for those who were jones'n for a fix. ;-)
Here's the scoop: Pocket-Monkey was down for 15 hours, between 11:22 a.m. on April 6th (GMT) and 2:17 a.m. on April 7th (GMT). (To convert those GMT times to your local time zone -- and remember, if you're in the UK, right now GMT is not your timezone, we're on BST at the moment), there are severalonlinesites you can use.)
The problem was an overloaded power circuit at the data center that blew and took down our web server (along with 10 other servers hosted near it). The hosting company apologize and say that they'll keep the load on the circuit lower going forward.
No games were timed out while the web server was down (we have a mechanism in place to prevent that), and timeouts will be off until about 8:00 GMT tomorrow, just to give anyone who couldn't get in time to play their games.
Going forward, since the last time Pocket-Monkey moved from one hosting company to another (a couple of years ago), the hosting industry has changed a fair bit. Later this year I'm looking at moving Pocket-Monkey to a new hosting arrangement which will provide (among other things) redundancy so that we're not reliant on a single machine. That sort of thing used to be too expensive and/or complicated for Pocket-Monkey (as the site is still supported by my Real Job), but now it's a real cost-effective option that also allows for growth -- which is good, because after the next major update (probably 'round about November, but maybe sooner) we expect Pocket-Monkey to start growing fairly quickly.
Sorry for the trouble. Enjoy your games! -- T.J. Crowder First Primate Pocket-Monkey.com
