Well, the recent poll and associated discussion were conclusive: It's not worth having email notifications. So:
We're retiring the email notifications feature on September 12th. We'll spend the time we used to spend dealing with them improving the site in other ways instead.
We'll send an email in the next couple of days to everyone who currently has email notifications turned on so they know in advance what's happening even if they haven't come by the site. (Update 2010-08-23: We've sent the emails and on-site messages; everyone with notifications turned on who's been to the site in the last six months has now been told.)
