Hi all,

If you use the Java version of our games, you know that the Resign button is quite near the Send button (right next to it in games like Backgammon where you don't have a Draw button; next to the Draw button in games like Checkers that have one).

I think we can all agree that's about as far from an ideal arrangement as you can readily get. :-)

I've always said that the DHTML games update would fix this. The last time I looked at moving the Resign button, I ended up completely messing up the applet display and it seemed like wasted time, so I dropped it. But the DHTML games are taking too long (because of other demands on my time -- you know, like the mortgage, or my son), so I took another look at it today and found that I'd made it a lot easier a while back with a different change I made to the applet.

So tomorrow we'll be updating the Java games to put the Resign button at the bottom right of the applet (just above the display of the applet version). Hopefully it'll be a lot harder to accidentally hit it there.

Enjoy your games!

LOL

I can't count the number of times I've hit it by mistake. So far I've managed never to actually confirm the resignation, but it's been close a couple of times...

Lol. I'll join you on that one. I've been thankful of that "Are you sure..." countless times!

On the other dialogue, when I have to pass my turn, I'm used to automatically clicking the checkbox so that I get to see the board for each move (otherwise how can I apply my psychic powers to the dice! lol ;O). I'll be glad of the [Resign] moving because what I'm always afraid of is one day sleepily applying that same automatic see checkbox, click it, hit [OK] action, and resigning the match. ;o)

Cool :-)

I wonder, when you're at it, if you could move the Next link/button some place very close to Send. Now when I want to send my move and go onto the next game, I have to travel all the way across the page which makes my mouse very tired.

You know that I actually used Firefox userContent.css to move the link where I want it but maybe other players would like to enjoy the comfort as well.

We'll be addressing that with the DHTML games. Believe it or not, the "next game" link is where it is for a reason. Originally, it was on the other side, where the Rules/Instructions link is now. But there is/was a bug in the combination of Internet Explorer, the Sun Java plug-in, and (I think) the Google ads we used to use (details in this thread). Moving the next game link to the other side made it much, much less likely that users would run into the bug (which has nothing to do with PM, but it was affecting a lot of PM users).

Now, A) The bug could well have been fixed, and B) We don't use Google ads anymore. But rather than rattle people's cages moving things around, we'll leave it as is until we do the new games stuff -- at which point, expect at least one fewer clicks anyway...

Enjoy your games!

While you're at it, could you implement an optional (i.e. user profile option) "Auto-next-game" function, so that hitting 'Send' carries you right along?

A few exceptions may apply (Ex. Backgammon games in which opponent is trapped).

Perhaps this could be handled better with a new button, near the current 'Send' button: "Send & Next".

Thoughts?

Good job, T.J.!

I hardly think you need to apologize for anything, Jock! Nothing like, what, over a million games of experience to tease out a tweak or two... :-)

Jock, you're quite the "silent partner".

You didn't know, for sure how all that would affect all of us, did you? :)

I think not.

Live and learn, and btw, you're quite exonerated! (As if I'm in that "lofty" position!)
Had it been me, I'm sure I would've made the very same "mistake".

Tis ok! :)

Great TJ I had an opponent that hit the resign button for one of our games and it was an error. but things sometimes happen for a reason.

I guess now we'll be accidentally clicking Offer Draw instead of Resign :-) Less lethal.

We could swap the Offer Draw and Undo buttons. Undo is a *lot* less lethal than either Offer Draw or Resign. :-)

I love your website. I would like to ask if you could move the "Roll" button away from the "Double" button in backgammon. I was surprised recently, I was very much behind in a game, and I was trying hard to bang out doubles, (as if I could, lol) but the mouse moved a hair and I clicked on "double" by mistake. Thank you.

Yes indeed. That's one of the things I'm doing in the rewritten DHTML games, making use of Fitts' law that the ease with which we can navigate to something on the screen is a function of how near and large it is.
