I'll have to look into it, a very brief Google indicates there's some confusion. I looked at two sites, and of course they disagreed with each other even though they both claimed to be talking about "American" checkers (although I have to admit the "darker color goes first" site seemed more definitive) and so clearly I need to dust off my reference books. My vague memory suggests that the "darker" color should go first, as you suggest, but I'll have to check this against other forms of "draughts" -- Pocket-Monkey is run by a pair of Americans, but isn't an American-only site. :-)
That said, until we offer the feature we want to offer, where the players can choose who goes first in the invitation, it's largely moot -- the person sending the invite (if it's a private invite) goes first (and will be shown as the lighter color). (If it's an open invite in the waiting room, the accepting player goes first -- and is therefore the lighter color.)
Hope this helps, -- T.J. Crowder First Primate Pocket Monkey
I was referring to the rules as defined by American Checker Federation and the British Draught Federation. Since the rest of the rules for the game of checkers on this site ugmm… almost completely comply with those described on the official American Checker Federation website, I guess we can call this variation “American Checkers”. Please see the following URL: http://www.acfcheckers.com/rules.htm
Thank you in advance, Walter
