Hi folks,

I wanted to post an update on the speed problems we've had since we moved to our new servers.

First off, a big "thank you" to everyone who sent in traceroutes and slow speed reports. Those have been very helpful. You don't need to bother any more, I think we probably have enough data to work with.

One of the ways that helped was to show us that it probably isn't a network routing problem. (That doesn't mean it's not a network problem, just that the routing is fine.) That narrows it down some. I've also found and fixed a couple of fairly minor configuration problems which I think have made (not surprisingly) fairly minor improvements. :-)

I'm sifting through the data I had the system automatically record, cross-referencing it with your speed reports, investigating the configuration of the servers, etc. Unfortunately, my real job has demanded most of my time the past couple of days and I won't be able to do an in-depth analysis until the weekend, but it's my top priority come Saturday morning. [Maybe someday PM will be my job; until then, have to pay the mortgage. :-) ]

I appreciate all of you who are bearing with us while I'm working this through. Hopefully the "elder"s here, the people who've been with us for a while, have reassured the newcomers that this is not normal and it certainly isn't acceptable. We'll get it fixed.

Thanks,

Hi folks,

I've made a configuration change, so please let me know by replying to this message if you see a difference (faster or slower) over the next few hours as compared to the same time of day earlier this week. The change was made about 15 minutes ago as I write this (see the date/time on this message, above and to the right of this text), roughly 17:45 British Summer Time.

Again, please if you can comment on the difference you see (for good or ill). It doesn't help if you say "it's slow"; I don't know whether that's a change. :-) Slower than yesterday, faster than yesterday, about the same as yesterday -- those are helpful.

Thanks!!
