Probably still some tweaking to be done, but I think I've found and fixed the major speed problem. I don't want to over-promise, and we'll see how it goes, but I found something which was clearly wrong and fit the evidence.
So what was it? There was an error (mine!) which was causing repeated unnecessary searching through the slowest part of the database. This had a knock-on effect on everything else, because with the database doing unnecessary busy-work, it had less time to devote to doing the things it should be doing.
This was an error I introduced as part of the update three weeks ago. If I'm right, it's actually kind of impressive the database server could do as well as it has been. :-)
I'm sorry again for all the trouble, and I thank you all again for your help figuring out what was going on. If I were working on the site full-time, I probably would have had this resolved within just a couple of days of realizing there was a problem. Sadly, though, my real job does actually require some of my attention. ;-)
Enjoy your (hopefully somewhat faster) games! -- T.J. Crowder First Primate Pocket-Monkey.com

touching wood, crossing my fingers rubbing on my lucky clover and other various lucky charms the site is running well, thanks for the hard work TJ, if you ever go full time on this site, you will be fighting of new members by the thousands good luck in the future
I think you've got the right idea. Every other site(almost) charges a membership fee, and they don't work nearly as hard as T.J. does to keep his people happy. How bout if he just works at his "other job" only part time. Of course, we could all pitch in and offer him early retirement from there so he could work here full time :)
Just at this very moment, I'm running a search which will probably slow the site down quite a lot. But don't worry, it's not the same speed problem, I'm having to look at something I normally only look at offline... -- T.J. Crowder First Primate Pocket-Monkey.com
My admin stuff reached the point where it was effectively taking the site offline, so I took it offline for a bit. Sorry about that, folks, we're back now.

I love the new look but speed is still an issue. Especially when making a move in the game. Takes forever. Hope you can help.
