In the past few days, I've been getting some strange error reports from probably five or six people. Since we haven't changed anything at all on the live site, it isn't at our end, but I really would like to know what it is.
So far, the reports take two forms, both from Java users:
People saying that when they go to make a move, the page "jumps" and they have to try again, and that works.
People saying that the Send button isn't working.
If those things are happening to you, would you post a note here answering these questions?
What operating system to you use? (E.g., Windows 98, Windows 2000, Windows XP Home, Windows XP Professional, Linux [and what distro], Mac OS, etc.)
What browser do you use? (E.g., Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari)
When did the problem start? (As precisely as you can.)
What exactly do you see when it happens?
Do any warnings appear, any new toolbars talking about anything being blocked, etc.? E.g., when the page "jumps", does anything at all new appear on it?
Does anything appear anywhere else on your screen?
If you're using Windows, do you have "automatic updates" turned on?
What version of Java are you using? Whatever came with your browser, or something you installed from www.java.com, or...? (If you're not sure, please go to the Help here on the site, click the "How do I check if my Java setup will work with the site?" question, and then follow the link to the diagnostics applet and send in your diags.)
I'm just trying to better understand what's happening. Again, it's not a change at our end, but if I can point people at a fix, I'd like to be able to do that.

these are the updates my son installed hope they are some use to you
Really stragne thing just happen to me- A window just pop up and said A new Turn has just arrived- and it let me make another move against the person I'm playing against- and that person wasn't blocked either- now I don't mind but it wasn't really fair- it was backgammon-
Windows XP Home Internet Explorer 2 days ago Saw a small box in the center of screen that said click to make a move??? I have to click- then click again latest Java version Auto updates turned on
I started having problems on the 14th. Windows xp home ie When I go to click on the roll button I have to do it twice. It doesn't go to my pointer but stays as a hand with a pointing finger. Sorry I don't know what it is called. First time I click the page moves up. Click again and it goes to my pointer. But I'm also finding this problem on other sites as well. Always having to double click when I use to only click once. No warnings, nothing new on page and I do have automatic updates. I'm going to go to the help page and start looking into my java now.
Ah hah! I suspected as much. What's happening is a change to Internet Explorer released recently. They've changed the way that Java applets have been put in Web pages for nine years, I believe as the result of having lost a lawsuit related to ActiveX plug-ins in web pages. Only Internet Explorer users who have the latest update will have this problem.
It's because Internet Explorer now requires that users click on an applet (or ActiveX control) to "active" it before they can do anything with it. That's why people are saying that the cursor remains a "hand" and the page jumps (probably to center the newly-activated control), until they click again (because the first click "activated" the control).
There's a way we can change our pages to work around it, I'll see what I can do. -- T.J. Crowder First Primate Pocket-Monkey.com
I'll throw my 2 cents worth in here TJ. I've had a problem sending messages and game invites. I type the message or offer the invite, but the person I'm sending it to doesn't get it. This isn't every time, just a random thing. In fact, I sent you an invite a couple days ago. Did you get it?
1. XP 2. IE, Firefox 3. about a week 4. nothing unusual 5. no warnings 6. nothing else appears 7. auto update not on 8. Java 2 v. 1.5.0 (build 1.5.0_06-b05)
Thanks, Carol
